Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) also known as Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMA / MMAW) or informally as stick welding is a manual arc welding process that uses a consumable elctrode covered with flux to lay the weld. Shielded metal arc welding is one of the world's most popular welding processes, accounting for over half of all welding in some countries. Because of its versatility and simplicity, it is particularly dominant in the maintenance and repair industry, and is heavily used in the construction of steel structures and in industrial fabrication. Basic Stick welding is not that hard to learn but knowing what to do and actually doing it are two completely different worlds! Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) - 6G This course covers hands on training utilizing 6010 and 7018 filler metals on carbon steel pipe with the SMAW (stick) process. The focus of this course will be, 6010 open root passes with fill and cover passes being made with both 6010 and 7018 electrodes in the 5G and 6G positions. Welding Position: 6G The 6G welding certification is a welding of pipe that is in standing on a 45 degree angle and cannot be moved. This test incorporates all of the positions. What makes this position so hard is there is an easy side and a hard side. This all depends if you are right handed or left handed and the welding processes being used. This one test will qualify the welder to weld pipe and plate in all positions. This is the hardest of all welding positions and the test typically given for the higher paying jobs. If you need to get one welding certification this is the position to go for! Course Duration - Part Time: 3 hours per day, Total Duration: 120 Hours after SMAW 3G else 240 Hours.
