Overview
The Indian Institute of Software Technology (IIST) conducts a comprehensive Teacher Training Program to prepare teachers for effective Abacus instruction. The program is designed for both new and experienced teachers who wish to develop a strong foundation in Abacus education and modern teaching techniques. The training combines theoretical knowledge with practical demonstrations, enabling participants to teach confidently and accurately.
Duration
The training program is completed in approximately 5 to 6 hours. It is conducted in an interactive manner with demonstrations, hands-on practice, and doubt-clearing sessions to ensure that every participant gains practical teaching experience.
Basic Concepts of Abacus
The program begins with an introduction to the Abacus, including its history, structure, and educational significance. Teachers learn about the various parts of the Abacus, bead values, place value concepts, and the correct method of handling the instrument. The session also explains how Abacus learning improves concentration, memory, visualization, speed, accuracy, and logical thinking among students.
Number Representation and Reading
Participants are trained to represent numbers correctly on the Abacus and to read numbers displayed on different rods. They learn place value concepts in detail and practice converting numbers between the Abacus and standard numeral forms. Special emphasis is given to developing speed and accuracy in reading and representing numbers.
Addition and Subtraction Techniques
A major portion of the training focuses on Abacus calculations. Teachers receive step-by-step training in performing addition and subtraction using various internationally accepted techniques, including:
Without Complement
Five's Complement
Ten's Complement
Mixed Complement
Each technique is explained with numerous practical examples and guided exercises so that teachers gain complete confidence before teaching students.
Multiplication and Division
For advanced learners, the training also includes Abacus multiplication and division techniques. Participants learn systematic methods of solving multiplication and division problems efficiently while maintaining speed and accuracy. Practical exercises are provided to strengthen understanding of these advanced concepts.
Teaching Methodology
The program also introduces effective classroom teaching methods for different age groups. Teachers learn how to conduct engaging classroom sessions, explain concepts clearly, motivate students, identify learning difficulties, and assess student progress. Practical tips are shared to make Abacus classes interactive, enjoyable, and result-oriented.
Use of Advanced Software
To support classroom teaching and skill assessment, IIST trainers may use advanced educational software such as Abacus Teacher and Brain Booster. These software applications provide interactive demonstrations, digital practice sessions, speed-building exercises, and performance evaluation. They help teachers monitor student progress and make learning more effective and engaging.
Practical Session
The training includes extensive hands-on practice where participants solve problems using the Abacus under the guidance of experienced IIST trainers. Individual attention is provided to ensure that every participant understands each concept thoroughly and gains confidence in teaching the subject.
