Dealkalization process for reducing hardness in a water without adding sodium is accomplished with a weak acid cation exchanger in the hydrogen form which converts hardness associated with alkalinity to carbon dioxide and water. The water is then put over a degassifier to remove CO2. A softener then removes any permanent hardness remaining in the effluent of the degasser. After degasser small amount of caustic may have to be fed to increase the pH level of degassed water.Weakly acidic cation exchanger. Through dealkalization the hardness and the bicarbonate content of the water are reduced, thus typically reducing the salt content in the water by approximately 75%. Used for production of boiler water and district heating water as well as process water in breweries. Flow rates upto: 1-200 m3/h. The plants are manufactured as one-tank and two-tank plants. The tanks are of corrosion free FRP and MSRL ( Mild Steel rubber Lining). A complete plant for production of boiler feed water typically comprises dealkalizer, CO2 deaerator and softening plant. The need for blowdown of the boiler is considerably reduced compared to the use of softened water solely as boiler feed water. If the water composition is suited for dealkalization, the method is suitable for large boilers and it is inexpensive in operation. When brewing the bicarbonate content is important. This can be adjusted by mixing dealkalized water and raw water.

The dealkalization process reduces the alkalinity in water. Along with alkalinity there is a reduction in hardness as well as sodium associated with alkalinity. Finally these reductions are reflected by a drop in the content of dissolved minerals in water. The dealkalization processes are * Split Stream Dealkalization * Dealkalization with a weak acid cation (WAC) resin. * Combination of WAC and Softener.

Utilise weak cation resin to change the bicarbonates (alkalinity) in the water to carbonic acid. To remove the carbonic acid, the water is passed through a degasser tower. When exhausted, the resin is regenerated by acid. The total dissolved solids (TDS) content of the water is reduced by an amount equivalent to the alkalinity present in the raw water and therefore partially demineralised water is produced.
