Desolventizer Toaster is a vapour tight stainless steel and carbon steel construction in several stages with a bottom-driven drive mechanism and pneumatic float and door system to control bed height in each stage for better desolventization and toasting.

The desolventizer toaster is a specialized piece of equipment commonly used in the food processing industry, particularly in the production of vegetable oils and protein meals.

Extracted material has tendency for retaining the solvent with it and this solvent has to be recovered. The retention varies from 25% to 30% on weight of material extracted. The basic principles involved in desolventisation is indirect/direct heating of material with steam to a temperature well above the boiling point of solvent and thus ensuring that no solvent is left over with the material. Vapours of solvent are then sent to the condensers via scrubber where solvent is condensed. The D.T. consists of a vertical cylindrical vessel with horizontal jacketed compartments i.e. Double Bottoms and a central rotating vertical shaft on which blades are mounted to sweeps in each compartment. The Material to be desolventised and toasted is fed in to the top compartment of D.T and heated with open steam. Salient Features Intimate contact of material with hot surface helps in properly desolventising the extracted meal i.e evaporation of hexane from the meal and there by maintaining quality of the finished product. Steam consumption is also reduced as steam circulates internally. Mechanical/Pneumatic level controlling system maintains minimum bed height for complete desolventisation within short contact time. Vapour outlet from DT is passed to economizer thus maintaining energy efficient process.

The DT is a vertical tower with a shaft having blades at intermittent levels to discharge meal from one stage to the stage below it. There is a main vapor duct to which pipes from each stage is connected to carry solvent vapor. Solvent is removed from meal by steam. It consists of double bottom having thickness ranging in accordance with capacity of the unit, welded with stay pipes thus creating a space for steam to heat the plate. The design of DT is critical since solvent loses can be controlled here which is the major expense to run a plant. The DT is provided with mechanical seal and other arrangements to arrest loss of solvent. The discharge mechanism is mechanical one that is suitable to any capacity instead of pneumatic. The disadvantage of pneumatic is the need for additional expenditure in terms of controllers, air lines, compressors and maintenance.

Thus eliminating the possibility of air entry into the Desolventiser toaster. DT vapor outlet is routed through various heat exchangers. The condensers and economizer are so designed to achieve minimum pressure drop (across shell) Zero vent system is a unique feature of Kumar system to minimize the loss of hexane to the atmosphere through final vent. In this system additional in line steam jet ejector is incorporated to provide pull to the vapors, which allows the vacuum in DT Vapor outlet duct up to 25mm of water column. This ensures the effective removal of vapors from DT without any reflux. Exhaust of final vent steam jet ejector is passed to extractor through direct contact type condenser and exhausted to atmosphere through feed bin of extractor. This reduces the amount of hexane going to atmosphere along with air.

The Material to be desolventised and toasted is fed in to the top compartment of D.T and heated with open steam. Open steam condenses a lot of moisture in the material at the same time evaporating the solvent. The moisture up to 14 to 15% is condensed. The material then flows to lower compartment. In lower compartments the material is gradually heated to 115 to 120 C thus evaporating all the solvent, cooking the material and driving away extra moisture. The cooking in presence of moisture destroys undesirable enzymes. The resulting high temperature toasts the material. The solvent and water vapors from various compartments are led first to a dust catcher wherein they are scrubbed with hot water spray to remove fine dust and then led to a condenser to condense the vapors. The desoventised and toasted meal from bottom-most compartment discharges into a reddler conveyor.
