The Geographical Indications Act affords protection to goods that can be identified as originating or manufactured in the territory of a country or a region or locality in that territory where a given quantity, reputation or other characteristic of such goods is essentially attributable to its geographical conditions. Chanderi sarees (World) is the registered Geographical Indications by the Registrar of Geographical Indications, Chennai under Geographical Indication of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act 1999 through Geographical Indication No. 7; Certificate No. 4 dated 2nd April 2004. Any fabric produced outside the geographical boundary of the place chanderi can not be termed as chanderi. Any violation to this is a punishable offence under law.
