The HI-TRAC Shield Ring is a temporary shield used during closure operations to reduce gamma and neutron exposure to the crew. The outer and inner shells of the hollow Shield Ring are made from aluminum or stainless steel. During closure operations the Shield Ring is attached to the top surface of the H-TRAC (or HI-STAR) and the interior annular region is filled with water to provide effective gamma and neutron shielding during closure operations. When empty, the Shield Ring is lightweight, allowing easy handling. In addition, the Shield Ring is supplied in two segments allowing compact storage.
