Sewage/Effluent contains soluble and insoluble form of inorganic and organic compounds. Soluble inorganic compounds are mostly salts of light metal in lower concentration and does not require any treatment. Inorganic insoluble are dirt and dust which are having higher specific gravity and get settle down. Bigger sizes get settled in grit chamber and finer size particle get settled/separated with Aerobic Sludge. Organic compounds are mainly Carbohydrates, Proteins and Fats which are measured as BOD in terms of Pollution. It is subjected to treatment via biological conversion and it is treated in the activated sludge process. This treatment is also known as Aerobic suspended Growth System. Sewage/Effluent containing waste organic matter is aerated in an aeration basin in which micro-organism metabolize the soluble and suspended organic matter. SBR technology is one of the most advance system of Activated Sludge process. The Cyclic Activated Sludge Process is operated in a batch reactor mode, which eliminates all the inefficiencies of the continuous processes; A batch reactor is a perfect reactor, which ensures 100% treatment. A sequencing batch reactor is an activated sludge type wastewater treatment system in which different treatment operations are carried out in one vessel. This differs from conventional wastewater treatment where the wastewater flows from one vessel to another, each vessel performing a specific treatment operation. Different environments are created in the SBR by controlling process equipment such as air blowers for diffusers, pumps and decanters during a cycle. The process is controlled and coordinated by a programmable logic controller (PLC). UEM has designed and installed a SBR system followed by UF/RO for Elementis Specialties Inc., West Virginia, USA. Generally, the wastewater is first treated in biological treatment systems and then passed through the UF/RO stages to make it suitable for recycle / reuse applications. These systems have a very large potential market considering the scarcity of fresh water and problems associated with disposal of untreated water. UEM has also successfully installed SBR technology at Indorama Petrochem, Thailand. Here the PTA wastewater has high and difficult to biodegrade constituents. UEM proposed the technology of anaerobic followed by aerobic treatment system (SBR) to treat the waste water upto the levels suitable discharge.

The Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) is an activated sludge process designed to operate under sequences for the various phases of biological treatment where aeration and sludge settlement both occurring in the same tank. The SBR design is a fill and draw type activated sludge process where individual reactors are filled one by one in five discrete periods i.e. Anoxic fill, React, Settle, Decant and Idle / Waste sludge. The SBR system can be designed with the ability to treat a wide range of influent volumes hence there is a degree of flexibility associated with working in a time rather than in a space sequence. SBR aeration system generally consists of fine bubble air diffusers. In this process, the compressed air is sheared into small bubbles creating large specific surface area for higher mass transfer efficiency between air and wastewater. SBR produce sludge with good settling properties, provided the influent wastewater is admitted into the aeration in a controlled manner. An appropriately designed SBR process is a unique combination of equipment and software providing highest level of effluent quality on all parameters including BOD and Nutrient removal. Automated control minimizes the manual intervention and thus less possibilities of operational errors.
