In high-stress components like automotive gears, aerospace bearings, and turbine shafts, subsurface structural defects can be catastrophic. Standard Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods like liquid penetrant or standard ultrasound are excellent for finding open cracks, but they are blind to the invisible precursor of failure: surface grinding burn and localized microstructure degradation. Waiting for a micro-crack to physically form before detecting it means the component is already compromised.
At Inspax Inspection, our Barkhausen Noise Testing (BNT) Services leverage advanced micromagnetic principles to evaluate material microstructure and residual stress states. As an independent third-party inspection agency, we provide high-speed, non-destructive detection of thermal damage, grinding burns, and improper heat treatment catching material degradation long before physical cracks appear.
The Physics of Micromagnetic Inspection
Magnetic Barkhausen Noise (MBN) is a non-destructive method applicable strictly to ferromagnetic materials. When a material is subjected to an alternating magnetic field, the alignment of its internal magnetic domains does not occur smoothly. Instead, the microscopic domain walls move in abrupt, microscopic jumps as they detach themselves from microstructural obstacles like pinning sites, dislocations, grain boundaries, and precipitates.
These abrupt jumps induce micro-voltage pulses in a sensing coil placed on the component's surface. When amplified, these pulses sound like acoustic noise hence the term "Barkhausen Noise."
The intensity and shape of the Barkhausen signal are directly governed by two primary material properties:
Residual Stress State: Tensile stresses increase the Barkhausen signal amplitude, while compressive stresses suppress it. This makes BNT exceptionally sensitive to tensile stress zones caused by abusive machining or grinding burns.
Microstructure Boundaries: Hard microstructures (like martensite) present a high density of pinning sites, restricting domain movement and lowering noise intensity. Soft microstructures (like annealed ferrite) allow free domain movement, resulting in high-amplitude noise signals.

BNT Signal Response
Grinding Burn
Overheating during machining generates localized tensile stress.
Sharp, localized spike in Barkhausen noise amplitude.
Retempering Burn
Extreme thermal friction creates ultra-soft over-tempered zones.
Broad, high-intensity signal profile indicating softening.
Rehardening Burn
Untempered martensite forms due to rapid localized cooling.
Drastic drop in signal amplitude paired with high coercivity.
The Inspax Advantage: Preventing Unpredictable Failures
100% Real-Time Surface Evaluation: Unlike destructive nital etching, which relies on chemical acids and subjective visual assessments, BNT delivers clean, quantitative, and automated digital data across the entire component surface without damaging the part.
Catching Failure at the Grain Level: By continuously mapping magnetic signatures, our technicians pinpoint exactly where manufacturing processes have left parts vulnerable to low-cycle fatigue or stress corrosion cracking.
