Nucleator BT Masterbatch is a pelletised additive masterbatch containing nucleating agents, specifically dibenzylidene sorbitol derivatives or closely related clarifying nucleator compounds formulated for polypropylene, pre dispersed in a PP carrier resin. It is used to improve the clarity, stiffness, surface gloss, and moulding cycle time of injection moulded, thermoformed, and blown film polypropylene products by fundamentally modifying the crystallisation behaviour of the PP as it cools from its melt state to a solid. Nucleating agents are a technically sophisticated class of polymer additive that work at the level of the fundamental solidification physics of semi crystalline polymers like polypropylene, and their effects on the optical and mechanical properties of the finished product are dramatic enough that they effectively enable PP to compete with PET in certain clear packaging applications.To understand the technical value of Nucleator BT Masterbatch, it is necessary to understand how polypropylene solidifies from the melt. When molten PP cools below its crystallisation temperature, the polymer chains begin to organise into ordered crystalline regions called spherulites. Spherulites nucleate from specific sites in the melt and then grow outward in all directions, incorporating more polymer chains into the ordered crystalline structure as they expand. In commercial PP without nucleation additives, the number of naturally occurring nucleation sites in the melt is relatively low, and the spherulites that grow from these sites can reach sizes of 20 to 100 micrometres or more before they impinge on neighbouring spherulites. The boundaries between adjacent spherulites, which are regions of slightly disordered amorphous polymer, scatter light. When the spherulite diameter is comparable to or larger than the wavelength of visible light (0.4 to 0.7 micrometres), the scattering is particularly effective and the PP appears milky white and opaque rather than transparent.Nucleator BT Masterbatch dramatically increases the number of nucleation sites in the PP melt by introducing a large number of uniformly distributed fine nucleating particles or fibrillar templates throughout the melt. With hundreds or thousands of times more nucleation sites per unit volume of melt, the spherulites that form are proportionally smaller because they have less room to grow before impinging on their neighbours. When the spherulite size falls well below the wavelength of visible light, light scattering from the spherulite boundaries decreases dramatically and the PP becomes visually transparent or translucent rather than opaque. This is the clarity improvement that nucleating agents are commercially valued for in PP applications, and it is why nucleated PP can visually resemble PET, glass, or other clear materials in consumer packaging applications.The cycle time reduction benefit is equally commercially significant in injection moulding. Because the greater number of nucleation sites from the masterbatch causes the PP to begin crystallising immediately and uniformly throughout the part as it cools in the mould, the part reaches a dimensionally stable solid state faster than unnucleated PP. The mould can therefore be opened and the part ejected earlier, without risk of the part distorting from residual thermal stresses or insufficient crystallinity, reducing the cooling phase of the injection moulding cycle. In high speed, high volume thin wall injection moulding, even a reduction of one or two seconds in the cooling phase of each cycle represents a meaningful increase in production capacity per machine per shift.
